Cantina / Re: recoveringgeek's Ossus Event Poll - redux

I marked all my feasible dates. In all cases I'll need to lock it in with as much advanced warning as possible because life scheduling remains fluid and stuff that's free now may not be later, but for the moment all the ones I marked should work.

FYI if we're rescheduling to allow more folks to show (whether because of conflicts or returning players still playing the content) just putting in my two cents that I'd be fine with that and will try to show whenever it ends up being. I know I said I was antsy to do post-Ossus stuff on future Jedi Nights, but community events are important for keeping things together. There's also no reason we couldn't schedule a Jedi Night on an alternate night if Thursdays are the only nights 'Geek can run his stuff (and I've already resolved to attend this Ossus event with my non Jedi mains so I can bifurcate timelines in my brain between characters if need be). I'm looking forward to using Ossus as a RP set piece for this, it's got a lot of great nooks and crannies.

I should still be good for tonight if the event is still on. I've been floored by a really bad bug for more than a week so I haven't had the chance to create any new Ossus-based character as I'd been considering, but I'll still pick a secondary character from my roster to show with. (Still not decided between a scoundrel-oriented character or a Jedi sort.) Illness has seen me crashing earlier in the night than usual so that might be a risk, but I'm looking forward to some community RP and will soldier through to the extent my compromised constitution score will allow!

I'm still trying to work out a way to pick a character who can play in the timeline of this event. 'Geek, is there a feasible spot in the plot you're running for someone to play a Jedi or scientist from the Ossus colony? I've got other options I can still turn to, but that idea has piqued my curiosity.

Geek's event is set for the 17th, not this week. Are we pushing this back two/three weeks, then? I've been looking forward to some Jedi debate around Ossus, I won't lie, but given the dearth of community events I totally understand wanting to coordinate. Most of my Jedi are in post Ossus world so a Jedi Night set back in time might be odd, but I could bring cranky old Master Arr out, he's Ossus plot free at the moment and he could harass everyone.

I suppose my question is, have you already role-played your Mains getting to Ossus and did that occur before the Imperial invasion and subsequent evacuation?

In my case I've already done RP with most of my Jedi mains set after the events of Ossus and assuming that the whole conflict there is now a few weeks in the past. I'm not sure if anyone else is in that boat too; the content did drop nearly a month ago so I suppose it's possible, but it's also been the holiday season and generally quiet on the community RP front so maybe most folks have had their characters in a holding pattern. In any event, no worries - like I said, I'll definitely be there one way or another and if I can't think of a way to get one of my usual characters to the party then I'd be happy to play any NPC roles if you need any.

I'm not going to put anything here behind a spoiler tag, but take this as a warning that what I have to say will completely spoil the Ossus storyline if you haven't already played it.

So over in this thread we talked about the various ways the Jedi Under Siege storyline could end, depending on player choices; a lot of what I'll discuss here will reference all those possible outcomes we outlined in that thread.

Ultimately what the Ossus events seemed to prove is that the "canon" game state is most likely going to continue to be very fractured, and possibly even fracture more. It appears that in an effort to satisfy players' demands by giving us both "choices that matter" and story content that can be entirely solo-played, they've given us only a very general stage that can be shared (Republic and Empire at at war again) while making the fates of many characters entirely fluid. But when the player's character (the Outlander) is a mover and shaker at the galaxy's most powerful level that means that the characters around them, whose fates become fluid, are all power players too: the Empress (or Emperor), the Supreme Commander, the leadership of the Jedi Order, and etc. As we know very well, this can cause us trouble as RPers.

My guess is that what we will most likely see as the story content progresses is that every major plot milestone in the story will be rather like Ossus or Iokath: a flashpoint of conflict where both Empire and Republic are involved, usually with opposing objectives but in the same location, so that each faction gets their own "side" of the storyline, but the storyline itself doesn't digress from these shared event stages (thus meaning content only has to be created once and can serve the full player base). In order to create a sense of two different stories, player choice will schism NPC fates further and further. And if they ever actually reach the point where battles resolve differently depending on choices then we'll be even more fractured. (Ossus and Iokath were situations in which, while we are told one faction emerges more wounded than the other, ultimately somehow both factions retain a foothold in the location and no one really has decisive control.)

So, with that being said, I feel like discussion of whether or not we want to agree, as a community, on a universal canon state, is worth revisiting.

For the purpose of putting suggestions into the pot, here's mine:

I recommend that we either assume that all NPCs whose life/death is schismed actually survive, or that they all died.

Personally, I feel going the route of all key NPCs surviving might be more useful. This would mean that both factions are existing in the "stronger" canon state, but more importantly it would mean clear and strong NPC faction leaders for RP characters to refer to and hang decisions off of. Power player Imperial characters can assume Acina is holding things firmly together and assigning missions. Power player Republic characters can assume Malcom (and the Chancellor) is doing the same, and Jedi characters can assume that Gnost-Dural is present as an influential Jedi leader.

The alternative route, assuming all key NPCs died, means that both factions are in more of a chaotic state. While this can breed good RP story opportunities too, it puts both factions (and thus faction-aligned characters) in the story position of being reactive rather than proactive, and my feeling is that reactive situations tend to lead us to feel like we need to be told what we're reacting to (whether that's by the game or by RP gamemasters creating content), whereas proactive situations tend to make us feel more comfortable assuming that our characters can launch initiatives without needing "permission" or a triggering event from the game or anyone else.

What do others think? Do we all feel we need a consensus world state? Do we want NPCs alive, or dead? (Seems easier to assume that everyone is alive or dead rather than picking and choosing which ones get lucky, since the pick-and-choose approach results in many more possible scenarios than two, making it harder for everyone to agree.)

Are we still on for this post Ossus debrief for this week's Jedi Night? Because Niarra (the character) wants to wear her Gnost-Dural for Grandmaster campaign buttons. :cheer:

I'll definitely attend! Not sure what character I'll bring, as most of my Jedi characters have undergone other RP or plotting around the assumption that they are in the post Ossus climax timeline, but if worse comes to worst and none of my primary characters can be used I still have a large stable of alts and I'll find a side character to bring color.

It has definitely been quiet around these parts lately, a slump in the general game community only exacerbated in the last couple months by the way holiday-heavy November and December can pull people's attention and time away from games.

I know there are some of us who fully intend to try to breathe more life (ie RP events) into things with the new year, however. I'd suggest continuing to peek in around these parts periodically to see if events are posted on the forum and in the calendar. It might take a couple weeks for people to pull themselves out of holiday-feasting coma and get their engines running, but I think Ossus provides opportunities for new plot lines, at least (or especially) for Jedi and Jedi-affiliated types!

I am so interested in RPing around Ossus, particularly in official-like Jedi ways. I do feel we probably need to revisit what we want to do about Schrodinger's Galaxy for that, and I keep meaning to post in that other thread but keep getting distracted; we still have some time to discuss before the 10th, though.

But yes, count me in for Ossus related Jedi-ing.

Thanks for the warning, Zaximus. I do have some characters who have Darth Hexid at Level 50 so I'm glad for the heads up. (Serves me right for thinking "I'd better max a non-story rewards companion that won't be taken away in another KOTFE move." So much for careful planning!)

Site Information and News / Battle Against the Bots
« on: 12/20/18, 05:53:04 PM »
Hey Community! I'm posting this in the forums because the Shoutbox isn't always a reliable way to make sure everyone gets info. I wanted to let you know what the site's Admin and Arbiter teams have been doing to combat the dramatic influx of bots and bot spam we've had over the last few days, and to give you a heads up on how it might impact users.

First off, steps have been taken to try to weed out as many bots as possible during the user registration process, and hopefully that will stop most of them. Bot accounts and IPs are being banned as soon as they are identified. Neither of these measures should impact current forum users. If you are directing new members/recruits to the forums please let them know they'll have to jump through a few hoops but tell them to stick it out. We are seeing a lot of activity happening behind the scenes that makes these steps more than warranted for the time being.

Another extra step we are temporarily taking is to make it so that new topics require site team approval before they will be publicly posted. This is the step that will impact all of our current users, so please be aware that there may be a delay before you see your new thread appear on the site. Especially with the holidays upon us, please give it a day or so before following up with the Arbiter team if you don't see your thread appear; it may just be that all Arbiters and Admins are engaged with their families away from the computer.

If despite all these precautions bot posts somehow still make it through, please be absolutely certain not to click on any links in them - both for the safety of your own computer and also to make sure we aren't flagging the site as fertile ground for further attacks.

Cantina / Re: [SPOILERS] Jedi Under Siege
« on: 12/18/18, 02:04:04 PM »
Great summary of the plot points, Ela!

I've played Ossus through about three times on each faction and I think there are a few points at which there's more specific nuance. Here's what I've filed away from my playthroughs:

Could Either be Dead or Alive, alive and with their faction, or captured by the opposite faction:
  • Darth Malora
  • Master Gnost-Dural

My understanding was that there's no way Malora actually stays with the Empire. She might be captured by the Republic, but the other alternatives are either that she leaves the Empire and breaks out on her own to pursue her research (at least this is what she says she's considering), or she is invited to join the Alliance and work with the Outlander (and Oggurobb). Maybe I just haven't pursued the right dialogue options to confirm that she absolutely will return to the Empire? I just know that on all of my playthroughs so far, she implies that she won't when asked if she plans to return.

The Jedi
  • Since the Ossus Jedi weren't a completely organized group - more like refugees in hiding - they were free to go wherever they chose after the evacuation. It's not explicitly stated, but heavily hinted, that a majority joined General Daerunn aboard his starship, bound for the Core Worlds to rejoin the Republic. Tau was part of this group.
  • Master Gnost-Dural mentions that only two other organized Jedi factions survived the war with Zakuul: the Green Jedi on Corellia, and a "small group" that remained on Tython.

My understanding on the first point comes from dialogue options that the Jedi Consular got combined with character dialogue, which is that Gnost-Dural and his Jedi are explicitly invited to essentially come back to the Republic (my brain is telling me to Coruscant, but I'll have to play it again to verify because that may just be the urgings of my head canon) and the suggestion seems to be that they might very well do so. That's separate from Tau and the Jedi who choose to go with Daerunn in what is implied to be a more military capacity. I seem to have it in my head that Gnost-Dural agrees it might be time to go back... but yeah... that may be just my knowing how much Niarra-the-Character would pull hard for Gnost-Dural to be the new Grand Master.  The civilian colonists on the other hand were definitely going to Taanab, yeah.

On the second point as to other organized Jedi factions, Tau specifically cites three. The Green Jedi on Corellia, whom she and Gnost-Dural believed would never be convinced to leave Corellia, a group on Tython, and also a group on Ilum (I found this latter particularly interesting). Naturally as RPers we've established our own very organized and significant groups of Jedi elsewhere too, but at least now we can add these very official ones to the list.

I have more thoughts on how this impacts a "canon" galactic state and I'll talk about those later in that separate forum thread, because unfortunately Ossus absolutely didn't bring things in line, it just further deepened the schismed state of Schrodinger's Galaxy.  :sigh:

As for inspiration for RP, I can certainly say that Ossus inspired a bucket-load of thoughts for me at least regarding Jedi RP specifically. I think it's also uniquely great for small group RP events since almost all of the instanced story areas are re-accessible as repurposed daily Heroic missions.

My interpretation of the article is that the difference in the pre-war state of the galaxy is more significant than just whether or not it's Acina or Vowran in power.

For example, on the Republic side, the article lays out that if Malcom is alive then Chancellor Rans has managed to militarily strengthen the Republic so that they are strongly positioned to defend against an Imperial attack. Whereas if Malcom is dead it states the Republic is weakened and not well-equipped to defend against a Sith invasion.

On the Imperial side, if Acina is alive then the Empire is stable, in-fighting is at a minimum, and Imperial strength has been built up to a point where the Empire is strongly positioned for an offensive (and in this case it's strongly positioned for an offensive against a weakened Republic). Whereas if Vowrawn is Emperor then Sith in-fighting is back in play and the Empire is in a weaker state and not ready to commit itself to an offensive (in this case against a Republic that is well fortified).

So aside from the significant question of who is leading the Empire, this set-up could potentially mean that one power is in a losing position and the other in a superior one. This changes the motivations and sense of urgency for characters attempting to defend either faction.

My guess would be that the devs will at some point in the expansion storyline put in events that will force the two powers onto more even footing, if only because in faction-based MMOs it's very hard to let one faction come out definitively on top without angering half of your player base. However, KOTFE/KOTET established that they are also willing to shift the storyline heavily into single player territory so there's no guarantee they won't let things further schism.

As for whether or not we as a community want to agree on a community canon, I would put out for consideration that maybe a good way to go would be to say that no one died on Iokath. Sure the Outlander might have sided with one faction or another, but since it's most likely that most players sided with their own faction it's probably a safe bet that most players have as their personal head canon that either Malcom or Acina are still alive depending on their main's faction. So maybe we all agree that both characters are alive, and as such both faction governments are stable in such a way that we can hang plots off of it. (Alternatively, if we want to create more urgency and drama for faction defenders, maybe we agree that both Malcom and Acina died. That seems less likely to align with most individuals' head-canons, though.)

I don't see much of a need to codify an Outlander, honestly, as the Outlander themselves feels sort of... irrelevant? Certainly it's more or less irrelevant to anyone who isn't RPing their characters as deeply involved with the Eternal Alliance. And though I know some people have attached their characters to the Alliance in the past, the Alliance's growing irrelevance to the plot along with the long-established understanding that no one is the Outlander/Barsen'thor/Wrath etc has already made it so that no one has ever really introduced the Outlander as a significant RP element in community stories. (Though if we were ever to establish one, I'm all for Pehn-generated chaos.)

It might behoove us to revisit these questions after Jedi Under Siege drops, though, in case that gives us plot elements that start to even out the faction power imbalance again. Of course, that still won't solve the Empress/Emperor question.  :sigh:
