Huh. I didn't realize he'd done those. I know him as a major composer for the Everquest franchise. He did a lot of the EQ music after I quit, and many many songs for EQ2 as well. I should find some of my favorites.

The advent of CD and DVD media allowed developers to start shoving little movies in front of (and throughout) their games, often opening with little music videos meant to introduce the setting and characters in an exciting manner.  Some of my favorite video game music of that era accompanied these opening videos, and I figured I'd share a few!

Vagrant Story - 'Opening Movie' by Hitoshi Sakimoto, Takeharu Ishimoto and Hirosato Noda https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krY83viRbaM
Koudelka - 'Requiem' by Hiroki Kikuta https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEjhFVazKKQ
Breath of Fire IV - 'Opening Animation' by Yoshino Aoki https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCJ8XHol-D4
Legend of Mana - 'Intro/Song of Mana' by Yoko Shimomura https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1PnieCgVyY
Chrono Cross - 'Scars of Time' by Yasnunori Mitsuda https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=923fVDDwaHo
Arc the Lad II - 'Theme of Arc the Lad' by Masahiro Ando and Keiichi Oku https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0iFjj0N32w
Suikoden II - 'Opening' by Miki Higashino and Keiko Fukami https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f4eGQ9MIWM
Suikoden III - 'Ai wo Koete' by Himekami https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VijYRD_KsQE
Pehn Qardaak - Captain of the Rodomontade
Ran-del Qardaak - Big Time Space Hero
Lastagir - Hunter for hire, no plans to retire
Hyse Qardaak - Scholar and Warrior of Peace

Time to put some old skool stuff up :)

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
This is a game I played AFTER hearing some of the awesome music first.
To the Unhallowed Ground
Requiem to a Predicament
All Is Twilight
When a Person Changes
Distortions in the Void of Despair
Black Binding Nightmare
Behave Irrationally

Chrono Trigger
I think this must have been posted before, but just in case it hasn't - there's a reason this OST is still shared and known today.
I could easily list the whole soundtrack here, it's amazing. But here are my favs :)
Chrono's Theme (Chrono Trigger Theme)
Corridors of Time , and a beautiful redo of it for the Chrono Trigger: Resurrection Project.
Schala's Theme, and a Schala's Theme x Wutai mash-up from OCRemix which is absolutely gorgeous.
Zeal Palace
Undersea Palace
Yearnings of the Wind (Wind Scene) and a gorgeous cello Quartet version.
Manoria Cathedral
Ruined World
Lavos
"Son, you got wings on your armor and a tattoo goatee. Imma think nerd as automatically as humanly possible."

Let's play a game of 'shameless plug'!  Our subject today will be the Japanese composer Hiroki Kikuta, who composed the music from the beloved Secret of Mana, its never-(officially >.> <.<)-released-in-the-West followup Seiken Densetsu III, and one of my favorite oddities of the post-Resident Evil PlayStation era, Koudelka (a game on which he also served as developer, and which is the predecessor to the Shadow Hearts series).  Here are some tracks from each of those:

Secret of Mana
'Fear of the Heavens' https://youtu.be/NFN0GLAMJ3k
'Meridian Dance' https://youtu.be/v-wpOxKgchw
'Leave Time For Love' https://youtu.be/235uKFXbv8w

Seiken Densetsu III
'Where Angels Fear to Tread' https://youtu.be/8BmZrhGVldk
'Meridian Child' https://youtu.be/N0FaXFR6wbo
'Nuclear Fusion' https://youtu.be/YhGYAj0MbTg

Koudelka
'Requiem' (no video this time) https://youtu.be/OnZ4zq3lbKo
'Waterfall' https://youtu.be/-Eu_zij3Rz8
'Patience' https://youtu.be/FP-lXk57coo

Pretty good stuff, huh?  (I'm especially fond of 'Meridian Child' and 'Waterfall'!)  After directing Koudelka, Kikuta went back to freelance composing, doing music for things like unreleased Chinese MMOs, hentai visual novels, and releasing albums of his own work through his record company, Norstrilia.  Which brings us to one of his modern projects: the music for Indivisible, a 2D side-scrolling action-RPG from Lab Zero, the creators of Skullgirls.  He's already done three tracks for the Prototype version of Indivisible:

'Lost Genesis' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKcx0oWbdbA
'Girl of Destiny' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcAOihikWqA
'Crucial Fixture' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwvkYP-ejCs

Indivisible is putting out the hat for crowdfunds right now, with 14 days and 29% of their funding left to go.  If you're interested, check out http://www.indivisiblegame.com/ to download the playable prototype and learn more!

Technically, this song is used in a video game. But regardless, it's amazing. A shame there's such a strict copyright on the entire soundtrack because it's one I could listen to all day. The piano in these tracks is simply amazing.

Diebuster - Inazuma Double Kick - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xqsmaOC8YA

EDIT:
Diebuster - Buster Machine no 7 - https://soundcloud.com/i87l/buster-machine-7-gou-diebuster-ost

Diebuster - Buster Machine no Tamashii - https://soundcloud.com/user11224433/buster-machine-no-tamashii/s-9cxxu

Likewise, this song isn't very video game related, but there are a couple that use a different version of it. Regardless, get ready to get that 80s style hype going.

Gunbuster - Fly High! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEEPosF-tNU

Posting some other video game songs that come to mind. Most of 'em are very HYPE inducing and catchy.

Street Fighter V - Ryu's Theme - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYqsevBV97g

Xenoblade Chronicles - Unfinished Battle - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anuAekXi13M

Xenoblade Chronicles - Confrontation With the Enemy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhCCI8khCW4

Super Robot Wars - The Sword That Cleaves Evil - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VSA7CvnBAU

Super Robot Wars - Trombe! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCmTJVew_tY

Super Robot Wars - Steel Beowulf - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBKhqPwbxCg

Dragon's Dogma - Coils of Light - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcoLNTG1tTo

Dragon's Dogma - Imminent Triumph - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtilBmwDUNQ

Dragon's Dogma - Fateful Decision - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOKXXt4I0Mg

(Again, not a video game, but it's too hype not to let pass)
Fist of the North Star - Ai Wo Torimodose - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbaaI5xf4y8

And if that wasn't enough, just add the entire Soul Calibur soundtrack, Hotline Miami soundtrack, and every Super Robot Wars soundtrack.

Semi-on-topic?

I highly suggest everyone that enjoys video game music and at least tolerates Metal check out FamilyJules7x's youtube channel. He's the guy that did the Metal medley that walked through video game history that I linked to on the first page ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8-V4yuM984 ) and he's continued to put out Metal covers. He's been gathering up votes for new Medleys lately on a theme, and he's really, really good at this stuff :D.
Character List:

Pub side: Lien Orell, Kyri Orell, Shaantil (possibly Dumas), Norland, Everen (bank alt ATM), Quarashaa (Pub version of the real Quarasha), Merrant

Imp Side: Quarasha, Effet Ornell, Arazel, Zedney, Zhel, Asori-Alnas

Civilization V has a lot of great music, though many of the tracks are just modified versions of older songs and not really original. Close enough tho. And yes, Brazil has a 50s song as their war theme.

Udan Mas (Indonesia war): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fAugSr40ig

Blast, some of you guys beat me to Shadow of the Colossus.

Dark Souls III
I saw Dark Souls earlier in this thread, so on that tangent I feel like talking about Dark Souls III's soundtrack, which I personally find GLORIOUS. Now, I haven't played Dark Souls personally, but I find the lore fascinating (which is quite surprising because in general I'm actually somewhat put off by settings that have an overly oppressive feeling to them), and the music here seems to encapsulate that lore brilliantly. For your pleasure, these four themes are among my personal favorites.

Main Menu Theme - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stWae6r7Blw
The Abyss Watchers - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0LdIZ8TWYo
Lorian, Elder Prince & Lothric, Younger Prince - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFRaZs6ri7s
Yhorm the Giant - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrbZc-J0-Z4
Dragonslayer Armour - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xy2OCRmxVAY

As a sidenote, there are some alternate versions of these soundtracks for different phases of their respective fights. Abyss Watchers has a second phase which is missing from the linked video, and the Princes have a phase without the chorus. The Dragonslayer Armour averts this and has both phases, but I feel the first phase of the song is so mind-numbingly awesome it sort of outweighs the latter phase.

Transistor
From the guys who did Bastion, Transistor is really a nice pleasant soundtrack with an emphasis on the cyber aesthetic. It has beautiful music, beautiful vocals, honestly the soundtrack is one of the distinguishing features of the game for me. I've come to associate some of the music with my characters, particularly my spy oriented ones. By the way, each soundtrack has a version that has the vocalist humming instead, or a straight up instrumental piece with the vocals removed.

Old Friends - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ql8K3KJyWgY
Forecast - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tCZkGa_1WY
We All Become - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9O2Rjn1azc
In Circles - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGMWL8cOeAU
The Spine - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41tIUr_ex3g

You Think Me Finished! NIER!

I read somewhere that the game Nier first had it's music composed, then arranged itself around it. Well, for that sort of formula to work, the music would have to be damn good, and Nier's music is damn damn good. A fair number of the songs evoke a sombre nature, others a sense of age, some with a "Oh God, we're doomed" theme, and a few with what I might call an upbeat counter attack feel. Some of the tunes have lyrics sung in a fictional language unique to Nier's setting. Here are a couple of them. ...Okay, a lot of them.

Grandma - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgMRNiEPPYg
Gods Bound by Rules - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LKIsWOSHAY
Dark Colossus Destroys All - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiDI4GZMVF0
Cold Steel Coffin - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMf-kDeAYCY
Emil Karma - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4aRbiTMBUE
Emil Sacrifice - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0x0-EYfwP-c
Shadowlord - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IEbfDtDaUc

The music really is effective, by the way. It underscores the game perfectly from all the scenes I've seen. The first time I saw a Nier cutscene, it involved a death scene (and there are a metric ton of them in this game), with Emil Sacrifice playing in the background. That scene made me bawl my eyes out (it hit me in one of my weakspots). This game's soundtrack is just beautiful. 'Nuff said.

Wow, I really got wordy, didn't I?

I knew some of the Palace history, but not the bit about Jaade crashing that barge. That's good lore, right there.
