The Lone Saber
« on: 05/14/17, 12:24:30 AM »
"I am Caius Courser Aurel, Aurelian Battlemaster of Clan Aurel. My people have chosen to align with the Eternal Alliance and though I am their Battlemaster, I understand that our radically different culture requires me to play a largely administrative role to ease transition. Before the Battle of Odessan, we kept our selves as a separate fighting force out of necessity; to be effective for the of the Alliance. To expose ourselves and to help integration, I've split my fleet and spread it out across the Alliance to help the commander and the other leaders build on the spirit of co-operation.

My role now is more familiar to me. As an Aurelian Battlemaster, I understand the pains of being away from the front lines... but more than anything else I find that the down times are the most difficult times of them all. So... to maintain sanity and productivity at the same time, I think it best to polish off some of the skills I'd gained in my time by repairing a datacron I first built when I left Tython. Looking back now, I think that those days might tell a story that gives us context into the birth of the Alliance. How to some of us, the Alliance is a chance to do things over.

I'm leaving these entries accessible to all Alliance Personnel; a living history and my part in all this. I'll add whatever I'm able to access. Though the damage is extensive, who knows what bits I can recover."

((OOC: O-kay! This will be my attempt to sum up my character's history and to bring him into the current day. I always had a good idea as to how to do it but actually doing it will be messy. PM me if you see anything that sticks out and runs contrary to actual IC events and as always, I'm glad to see feedback.))

"I've recovered the earliest entries. Just as well. What follows is my recount of how I saw that day. I want you to keep in mind that I was... a willing prisoner of the Order. I've got a few thoughts to add, maybe it might make sense to say it now but... well, I'll let it play."

Quote
"The Assault on Tython. I'd heard the commotion from my cell -- felt the footfalls of Jedi, Soldier and Pilgrim alike scrambling about the temple like killiks in a hive. The difference was that instead of clicks and and inaudible whirring you had directions being given out. Muffled directions of sight lines and furniture being moved around.

I was meditating when one of the Shadows guarding my cell came in - told me that evacuations were under way...the Temple was likely to be targeted.  I was actually surprised I wasn't among the first to be evacuated - not out of some sense of self importance. But a Sith on Tython right before a battle was going to happen? No reasonable commander would take an unnecessary risk of having a potential enemy behind the fortifications you just put into place. Armed or not. I half-expected them to seal my cell and check on me after the battle - assuming they survived. I didn't have time to ask, instead, he placed a lightsaber in my hand and told me to join some of the trainees who were to be evacuated near flesh-raider territory.

It happened pretty quickly - I didn't wholly understand at the time of course, but thinking back it was tactically sound. Flesh raiders were aggressive and territorial, any hostile force approaching would be met with resistance. To most Jedi this was less of a martial concern and more of an ethical one... but after seeing how shuttles were constantly dropping security and materiel, I could understand; there weren't many open and secure landing zones on Tython - near the temple, at least. The scorch marks around the temple grounds told me that. Moving towards the wilderness - as I had in my initial escape attempt made me a qualified pathfinder. And apparently I was trustworthy because I'd helped a lost padawan despite being on the run.

We had a small group - fourteen, to be precise. Besides the Shadow silently keeping stride we had a pair of knights that volunteered to escort us along with ten newly recruited trainees too green to even hold a training saber. Our journey wasn't without complications - a fighter had found us and hounded us before we got to the tree line. There were no losses, but a few of the trainees were injured in the process. We had injured - and we needed off Tython before the bombardments would begin in earnest.

We didn't expect our ride out to fire on us. Even with my years as a Sith, betrayal always cuts deep in the ruinous ways. Most of the trainees die a hail of blasterfire, the few that scramble to survive are cut down by one of the knights that had accompanied us. The Jedi Shadow who had let me from my cell is shot from behind just as he finished dispatching the other treacherous knight. And then the Flesh Raiders swarmed..

I didn't enjoy falling back on my Sith Ways."

There is a long pause, before a sigh is exhaled.

"The transport was serviceable. Tatooine seemed a good place to go. I'm leaving in a few hours to meet a buyer for this ship... then I'm off to see if my safehouse is still intact. I need a better place to sort all this out."

"We were attacked by Revanites. It seems so strange now to think on what had to transpire for that cult to even grow so large. To see how entrenched they were in both the Republic and the Empire. But I always think back on that day... the insane circumstances of my freedom, and how the galaxy only got darker. I never gave the Jedi the whole story, either. But I gave them enough of the truth. I was always willing to talk, willing to trade information. Not to sell out the Empire, but to give truth to my own existence. I guess, despite my secretive nature I wanted my story to be told. I'm not sure how far they went to corroborate my stories but if a Shadow was letting me out of my cell -- well I can only speculate."

"I remember the chaos that the Revanites caused;  treason on such a scale wasn't something that either the Republic or the Empire were ready for. But he did have a complicated history -- it didn't help that he was one of the most charismatic figures of his time. In our time. I've recovered the next entry -- preparations and logistics, really. I've omitted most of the boring parts. Not sure what anyone can get out of what's left but... well."

"The 3rd's been contacted. Lord <omitted> is preparing a briefing for my return. With my identities compromised, it's been more difficult trying to gauge the extent of the damage... my information network is, effectively shut down. It's not ideal, but if I'm right... the fleet's going to be busier than ever."

"The war was never simple. Never easy. It had a flat tone with it... a sort of typical tempo where opponents go back and forth, struggling over the same thing. The Empire struck first... then it fell to the Republic gaining more confidence. As time passed the Empire was finally able to mount a defense. But it always felt deadlocked... this moment broke that loud silence. I'm going to see what else I can find... I think my records of the time get quite a bit patchy."

I wish I'd been there for the first unholy alliance between the Empire and Republic.  Hearing the stories and reading the reports from Yavin? I wonder if the men and women who served at the time would be proud to see what we are now. What would they think?

I've unlocked the next few entries. In honour of those who served I've left the names intact.

This is Lord Rannoc, 3rd Expeditionary Fleet currently on loan to Darth Marr. Per orders we have begun running ground operations alongside Republic forces.

We expected difficulty operating effectively from difference in operational doctrine but underestimated the extent to which Revanite involvement impacted military cohesion. The Republic forces are the same. Key officers on both sides have urged we commit to mixed units to engage in minor skirmishes to build morale and increase unit cohesion.

It is a sound plan. .

Colonel Merrik, log update 30-913.

Captain Sharp has split many of our Black Ops contingent among the riflemen, dividing squads of men into fireteams and mixing them together with Republic forces. By divinding our forces further, the hope is to restructure military organization to value adaptability and agility over sheer firepower. It has since proven effective, allowing us to effectively strike both the Imperial Guard and Revanite forces with minimal casualties. Lord Rannoc has taken it upon himself to lead any forces encroaching Massassi territory, an increasingly common practice that Jedi and Sith alike. Lord Rannoc, however was wounded in an ambush. As I understand it, the Massassi are using a rather virulent poison. He is presently recovering, among the other wounded, though he insists on staying near the front lines. Unfortunately, weve lost two walkers to the wildlife and the larger Massassi, leaving us to rely on fixed placements to hold the camp. Im dispatching combat engineers to the front lines to make up for any firepower inadequacy. The Republic is sharing materiel which weve gratefully used to begin walker repairs. The men are entrenching our camp for the night. We await resupply before establishing this site as our forward operating base.

Captain Sharp, log entry 11-14-672.
We've improvised landing zones for supplies and troop deployments while the Mechanized battalions get through the jungle. I've noticed that many of the men have begun trading rations and have taken to their posts without their helmets. I've sent a report to command requesting that the practice not be discouraged. But the lack of helmet is a safety risk outside dining hours. I got an idea from one of the Republic scouts who was painting their more conspicuous armour with fauna to mark equipment with our own insignia. The truce is temporary, we all know that but it's not simple for many to still see each other as enemies after uniting against a common threat. We'll have small marks to remember each other by. We launch our offensive on the temple at 0730 local.

Assuming our mechanized gets here on time. We'll get this done, my Lord. Just in case -- it was an honour.

Sharp, signing out.

"I remember each of these men. While they served within my command, their example inspired greater acts from the rest of the Third Expeditionary. Captain Sharp is the sole surviving officer who returned among those I'd sent alongside Marr's forces. It's to him that I direct my question. His only price for an answer is a drink at the cantina."
